SMMCo | Provost Welcome Note

It is a pleasure to present Tumaini University - Stefano Moshi Memorial University College Prospectus for 2010-2011- 2011-2012.  Stefano Moshi Memorial University College (SMMUCo) is named in memory and honour of Stefano Moshi.  He was the first Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), 1963 – 1976, and the founder of the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center.

A Constituent College of Tumaini University, SMMUCo began in 2007. It inherited the buildings of the Masoka Management Training Institute.  The Institute was established by the Northern Diocese, ELCT, in 1991, to train personnel for the Church and the Nation, and taught programmes leading to Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.     The graduates of Masoka Institute are today scattered in all corners of the nation serving in different capacities.

SMMUCo consists of three campuses:  Masoka, Mwika and Moshi town.  Masoka serves as the administrative headquarters of  SMMUCo. Until 2009-2010 students admitted to SMMUCO were taught at Masoka campus.  At the beginning of the academic year 2009-2010 a new campus was opened at Mwika Bible College, forty kilometers from Moshi town, for the Faculties of Education and Theology. Two months later the third campus was opened at Moshi town in the renovated Tanzania Breweries Limited Buildings for the Faculties of Business and Management Studies and Science and Technology.

In the first academic inaugural year, 2007-2008, SMMUCo began with 326 registered students.  Among them were ninety-seven first year degree students in Accountancy; the rest were registered in programmes leading to diplomas and certificates of Tumaini University. In the following academic year, 2008-2009, the student population grew to 550. SMMUCo had developed new degree programmes in addition to Bachelor of Accountancy which included Bachelor of Business Administration with Education, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Management, and Bachelor of Education. In the academic year 2009-2010 the total student population taking degrees and non degree courses in those programmes grew to 843.  In this academic year, (2010-2011) the student population pursuing degree and non degree programmes totals 1399.  This population includes 147 students pursuing various certificate programmes of six months duration which are taught at Moshi campus in the evening.

The readers of this Prospectus are invited to read it carefully. It serves as a guide on the operation and the management of the College, codes of conduct which are necessary to achieve the primary objectives of the College, namely teaching, learning, research and service to our church and the nation.

Finally I wish all the student success in their studies as they enter to learn and exit to serve.

Professor Arnold J.Temu
